Is the interpretation of one's frame of mind always correct if you consider just the words a person speaks?I think we look for body language. Body language tells us a lot more than just the words spoken.
*In a meeting if a person is leaning on his chair, he may be interpreted as not interested.
*If a person is avoiding eye contact during conversation, that means he lacks confidence or has something to hide.
*If a person is biting his lips, that shows nervousness.
*If a person in a conference is sitting with his arms folded, he may be passive or simply against the proceedings!

So the same way, your tone reflects a lot while you speak over phone. Since, over phone people who are involved ina conversation are not able to see each other, we depend on our tone instead of body language to convey our frame of mind or to interpret the same for other speaker.

Intonation is not what we say, rather its how we say!

The same words may have two different meanings depending upon how you say those!Intonation may be used to sound sad, angry, authoritative, happy, respectful, helpful, etc. In daily life we may some time wish to sound sad or frustrated. If a person who is getting bored alone at home may think of calling his friends to go for a movie. In this case he may chose to sound sad so that his friends understand his position and agree to come to make him feel better.
Though proffessionally, you would generally like to sound active, happy, helpful, authoritative, respectful and confident.

Intonation may be applied to Hindi as well, though we do that on rare occassions when we are extremely emotional. Consider Shahrukh Khan delivering his dailogues by simply speaking them out! "Wo sattar minute" speech of Shahrukh would never sound that effective if he just speaks those dailogues out flat! English on the other hand is a musical language. We may not use a lot of intonation as our way of speaking English has a high influence of Hindi!

How do we implement intonation?
Tone can be modulated by gaining a control over PITCH, BREATHINESS, VOLUME, SYLLABLE STRESS, RATE OF SPEECH, etc. Practice makes a man perfect! The best way would be to pick a dailogue, speak it in different ways so the meaning changes every time you modulate the components of speech mentioned above!

*****A Word of Caution*****
You have to analyse the situation before using intonation! No(neutral) intonation may be interpreted as negetive. Sometimes though, it is better not to use any intonation. Let me give you a Hindi specific example:Ehsaan Qureshi uses a lot of intonation. His poetry is more due to the stretches instead of rhyming sentences! But Shakeel Siddiqui does not use any tone! He is perfectly neutral and yet a better comedian!

****************************Disclaimer********************************
Above mentioned article is my personal interpretation of what i have learnt during past couple of days! None of the words are meant to offend any individual or a group throughout this blog. If you feel this way, kindly let me know! If there is any misconception, i'll try my best to clarify or if you find any thing offensive though it may not seem so to me, i'll anyways remove that! This would be my personal choice though! We, Delhiites, face a lot of problems every day and many of those are self-generated. By the term ‘efficient city’, I mean a system with highly reduced wastage.
The biggest problems that everyone in Delhi is aware of are:
1. Energy
2. Water
3. Traffic
Coming on to Energy first, electricity cuts are a normal part of our lives. But will this shortage continue to persist? Well, Yes! At least cheap electricity surely will be scarce. Most of the electricity supply of Delhi is through coal and diesel power plants. Rising prices of fossil fuels soon may force these power plants to be scrapped. Then we will have to look for alternatives.
But shouldn’t we begin our search now or shall we wait for our homes to go dark?
I think nuclear power option is fantastic, but then disposal of its waste will bring further problems. Also, nuclear power does not seem politically viable!
So, we are left with natural resources like wind and solar energy. For a city like Delhi, where would you find huge pieces of land where arrays of wind turbines can be installed? So this possibility can be ruled out. Solar energy, according to me, has a great potential of being the ultimate energy source but the initial investment requirement makes it unsuitable for our city!
So, the only two options are left with us:
1. Bio fuel
2. Conservation
Bio fuel seems the best alternate source. The reason is that being densely populated; we have such a huge concentration of raw material generators walking around. What can be better than utilizing your own waste?
By doing this, we can also solve the garbage disposal problem. Also, we don’t need to pollute Yamuna as our waste is precious! We must separate our garbage for kitchen waste and recyclable material from rest of junk. The organic waste can be used for production of bio gas.
Conservation is the next best thing. We have seen so many photographs of street lights switched on during the day. Instead of having a manual system, we can automate the street lights. Though it needs investment, but very soon break even will be reached as wastage costs more! A simple system running on an inexpensive microcontroller with an LDR (Light Detecting Resistor) can control the street lights for up to 3-5km. So, using a few thousand automatic systems, we can save precious electricity. Though this does not mean we have the license to waste that extra power at our home. We still need to be careful at using electricity at home. We must not forget it is a chain. It ultimately gets back to you indirectly. If we waste electricity, commercial electricity will be scarce. Thus alternate costlier power will be required to run the factories and so the finished products will further be costly!
Coming to another solution, we know there is a lot of construction going on for residential complexes. I feel it is best to make such efficient designs so that these buildings consume lesser power. The design should be such that the houses are enough illuminated through the day by natural light. During construction itself, central solar water heater should be installed along with rain water harvesting system.
Coming on to water shortage, we know that we get our water supply from ground water and neighboring states. Rain water is what we have not been able to effectively utilize as of now. Though green area in Delhi has been increased many folds by the fantastic efforts of government and various NGOs, still it is not enough. Rain water harvesting system should be installed on all public and private buildings. At least the new buildings should have a compulsion for that.
In past few years, many swimming pools have opened up showing signs of development and rise in standards of middle class. The water from the pools needs to be changed every week. All this water should be treated properly.
Last, but not the least, comes traffic. Traffic seems to be on top of the priority list for the government and rightly so. Despite rickshaws, auto rickshaws, DTC buses, blue line buses, low floor buses, metro, metro feeder buses and radio taxis, public transport caters only those who cannot afford private vehicles. Though over time, metro has gained popularity, still the load of private vehicles on road is killing the traffic system.
Government has made fantastic efforts for making ring road red light free, BRT came up and now monorail is being planned. We recently had talks about a smart traffic system. This is what I think is the need of the hour. We Delhiites burn fuel worth millions each day on red lights and traffic jams. We over speed on empty stretches and then slow down too much in heavy traffic, reducing the mileage of our vehicles. Consider a traffic system in which, if you travel with speed exactly as the limit, you will find all traffic lights green. Thus maintain a constant speed, minimize breaking and maximize fuel efficiency. This way the wastage of fuel to some extent can be reduced along with the pollution. This will also improve road safety as over speeding is discouraged. If a driver over speeds, he will eventually find the next traffic light red. This system practically works in many countries of the world. Though Delhi is different, but we must plan a similar system to manage traffic properly.

If we dream of making Delhi, a world class city, we must make efforts to increase its efficiency. Every one has to make efforts and contribute. The government, the NGOs, the environmentalists, the technologists and most importantly every common Delhiite must cooperate as a single unit in this direction. Remember “Boond Boond se hi Sagar banta hai” (Ocean is created drop by drop)!

India TV, A National Embaresment?

My Pick from the news is “INDIA TV”. This one channel pretends to be so caring to people, half of its news begin with “Hum aapko batate hain”, “India TV ki pehel se” and “Hum apne darshako ko aagah karna chahte hain”. Listening to any of these phrases, I always stick to this channel, only to know “Khali’s Lunch is my monthly meal”, “My brother, instead of getting into IIT, should buy a car and have fun as world will be over by the time he graduates”, “A child of a village has a cobra as his friend” and not to forget “Kalpana Chawla has resurrected the fourth time”!

I am sure if you flip channels and often come across India TV, you remember the ghost of grandma in the lift! The “pandit ji” of India TV is the best “pandit ji” I have ever seen! His first line is always a Sanskrit shlok! The next line is its English counter part! Then rest of his chat is in Hindi! Believe me if you havent noticed, he speaks for 5-10 minutes constantly in one breath!

Even right now they have Rakhi Sawant’s celebrations from 9X channel’s reality show! Rakhi is the second best species thy love after aliens ofcourse!

Recently, I stopped when I heard a cold voiced man saying “Wo aapki khidki se jhaankte hain”, “kya aap vishwaas karenge?”, “unki nazar har pal aap par hai”… I stopped to expect Income Tax department people, but figured out those were aliens instead!

Yesterday, all limits were crossed. The same heavy voice got into my ears ”wo aapke saath baithe hain”, “wo aapke saath TV dekhte hain”, “wo aapko jaante hain”… Looking at my dad, I thought they are talking about Father’s Day celebrations. But again, Aliens! “Hum shukr se aye hain”, “ji haan, ye hai khulasa India TV ka”, “hum insaan dharti k nahi, balki, aliens hain”… Looking at my brother who cracked every engineering entrance exam, I told my dad, “ye to pakka alien hi hai”!

If you are getting bored, feel like killing yourself, just wait! For 30minutes watch India TV, and you will feel like killing the channel reporters!

Stereotyping Unjustified!

Stereotyping: Having a set notion about an individual or group.

Often in life I have been stereotyped. Well, is it that bad? Yes! Ask me how much it hurts.
It sometimes seems that some of the notions are made to make you stop doing what you want to. Stereotyping is basically a barrier that keeps a divide between boys and girls, men and women, old and young…
You never know when you are crossing the line. There are lines every where damn it!

Ok, you try to befriend a girl; 50% times you are misunderstood as fooling around. Rest 50% times you are accurately understood!
Men are supposed to be ruff n tuff, who like speed and violence. You don’t drink? You ain’t a man! Men are harsh.
Girls are sweet, innocent and delicate.
Baniyas are kanjus.
Cricketers are doing too much advertisements, they are all for money and not interested in the game.
Politicians have to be corrupt. Delhiites are worst drivers. Indians are poor.
There are hundreds and thousands of these!

And my mind seems to explode when I listen to even one of these! I firmly believe in individualism. Sometimes when I defend girls, I am misunderstood as a feminist. Let me clarify this once and for all, I am an individualist. If a person is good at something, why do I care if that’s a “HE” or a “SHE”?

I consider stereotyping as a mask to biased opinions kept alive to let things be the orthodox way. People are different at different times. Sometimes I love to ride my bike zigzag at high speeds and at other I like to just smoothly sail my machine across the nice wind. Sometimes I am watching disgusting movies like “Hostel” and at other times I am shedding tears in “Love Actually”.
I don’t like to be categorized, can’t I be set free?
Answer is, “NO”!

I finally understood after years of frustration, that it is human nature. Stereotyping is built-in defect in humans. Wonder how I discovered that?
Just consider these words of mine and you’ll know:
“Hindi movies are just crap”
“Shahrukh can only work in those happy times and stupid senseless family movies”
“Girls can just cram things up, they don’t have logic or brains enough”

This is public apology to all I stereotyped. Trust me I have changed just because I have realized what it means. I would not like to stereotype those who stereotype, so I think we humans have an ultimate built-in facility that we should use: Self-realization.

Deceptive Monopoly!

Deceptive: Adjective: misleading
Monopoly: noun: control over a trade or product, complete dominance

Monopoly is something that every company dreams to achieve in its particular domain. But is it safe for the society?
In my personal view, monopoly is like a poison. It turns angels into demons. Monopoly is like a ticking time bomb about go off. A danger to the society, monopoly is synonymous to Satan according to me.

Just consider a company that has no competitors strong enough to move its market share, what would happen? According to me, the pressure on company would go down. Its expenditure on innovation and price constriction would be of lesser importance to the company. Thus it would be harm to the society.

Just consider if there was just one newspaper, you would only get to know what they would tell you. You would only know what they want you to know. This is a kind of slavery!
Just consider if there was only one cellular operator. You would have never been able to get flat Rupee1 call! Bus ek rupaiya! No schemes for messaging, no 100% recharge vouchers! Soch k bhi darr lagta hai!
Just consider if there was only one news channel. Ok that was a bad example! One news channel gives the same news as the other!

Well, with this article I am targeting two major IT giants and in a particularly personal experience of mine, the audience or the “AAM JANTA”.

The first IT giant I wish to target is, Microsoft, according to me the 2nd best company I would prefer to work for and the 1st worst company I would like to work against! Just contact your 51 friends and ask them which Operating System you have on your computer at home. Trust me a clear majority will say Microsoft.
The cause is that Microsoft either sells you the OS, or simply hands it over to you! We know the biggest observable piracy is through Microsoft. And this is such a company that benefits from piracy of its products and so it does not do much about it!
The effect is such that many cool OS are lined up in the market but are still being left out unseen! Remember I featured Splash Top in My Opinion once!

The second company is Google. Google according to me is the best company to work for or against. If you work for them, you are King of The World! If you work against them, you’ll eventually work for them, coz Google will eventually buy you or will sign a beneficial agreement of some sort!
Now I just wrote so many things in favor of them, you might be thinking maybe I lost my point! But I still hold my concern firm that Google according to me is the biggest threat mankind has ever had!
Google is set to kill point of view of people. We get most of our knowledge on internet through Google. What if they give us single side of the story all the time? Google can actually make us Zombies who shall believe what Google wants them to believe!
Though they have a fair monopoly, but the most threatening form as well!

My last concern is the audience that does not speak out! Miss Neha Jini today unknowingly inspired me to realize what is happening around. Very truly I discovered that my audiences are allowing themselves to make my view the only view by not disapproving me at any time. She had the courage to let it on my face against an article of mine. But still she is a criminal; she dint let others know her side of the story!
A mute audience is the biggest ruining factor of the society!

Social Service for free?

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you get to hear the phrase “Social Service”?
Last semester if you had asked me, I would have had responded with some of this -> “I am sorry?”. Uh well, most people would respond to this as donations, NGOs, free services, etc. But I truly feel that times are changing! At least I have a completely new outlook on social service.
Consider this, you do something for a social cause, then you get rewarded for the same! What I am talking about has nothing to do with donations and free stuff. Being an engineer I realized that in my field of expertise there is a huge demand of softwares for many groups of people. For these people things do not work out as good as for the “NORMAL” people.

Before coming to my exact and personal experience, I would like to defend my thoughts in advance so as to make it easier for me to prove the worth of my content. Just the name of this movie will tell the whole story what this article talks about. “TAARE ZAMEEN PAR”, directed and produced by Aamir Khan is a perfect example of commercialization of a social thought. The way Aamir Khan, one of the greatest actor and one of the most inspirational mind in Bollywood, presented his concern for the Dyslexic children, it is a clear indication that if you need to do good for some one, it is not necessary to go the monetary way. Whatever be the field we work in, there is a group of people who may need our support in one way or the other. The contribution can come through your work and it may not be for free after all!

Now coming to my experience as an engineering student, the word “SOCIAL SERVICE” rings the bells in the hearts of examiner once you begin presenting your work. I realized, it was not the difficulty level that justified my project’s worth as a final year project, it was rather the relevance! Innovation and uniqueness were the two qualities that “AUDIO CAPTCHA” has. Once you add a social service factor to it by adding the phrase “to aid VISUALLY IMPAIRED”, it gives you a winning combination even before the demonstration or explanation of the project begins. If you really feel I am boasting about it, I think my achievements with just this topic will inspire you to go ahead with a similar project in near future if you can.

1. 2nd Prize at Technical Poster Presentation, National Student Symposium, IEEE students’ branch, Fervour 2008, Bhartiya VidyaPeeth College of Engineering.
2. Fantastic marks in my own institute for evaluation as final year project.
3. 3rd Prize at University Final Year Project Presentation among IT department, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University.
4. Appreciation Letter from HOD, CSE/IT Department, Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology.

I think this evidence is enough to relate the topic with its success rate.

*Kindly note, this article in no ways of interpretations means that you should find such a topic and lure the examiners for prizes, marks and appreciation. This is to encourage your thinking towards people who are mostly forgotten in the society just because they are thought to be INCAPABLE and INCOMPETENT comparing with so called NORMAL people. This kind of view can only be presented by people who have a very narrow minded approach. But this is the ultimate truth of our society.

The point I wish to make is that in a fast and competitive world, if you give a little thought to the needy, trust me there is still room for such thoughts in educational as well as in commercial field. Medicinal R&D is another very good example of the same. The drug for cure of aids is a very noble cause. Hence, the companies going forth to achieve this mission worldwide have received tax holidays and redemptions. Ultimately when the drug is out, it will be sold with profitability factor. So I believe time is back when you need not SACRIFICE your life to serve someone. You can very well do that while getting handsome returns and a lot of appreciation.

** I will be writing more about the details of my project very soon.

Happy Mother's Day!

Year 2008, May 11.
The moment you hear "Mother's Day", most of you'll start to play the song "MA" from TZP in your heads. There are many communities on orkut that say "I Love My Mom". I am not a part of these, but its not that i dont love my mother, its just that these communities are full of spam!

Well, the purpose of writing this blog is to analyse how much important is it for us to appreciate some one. I have heard a million comments on such days like "Women's Day", "Father's Day", "Teacher's Day", etc. People just do not give credibility to existance of these special days. What can be the possible reason? Or rather let me rephrase this a bit! There is not just one or a few, rather a plethora of reasons for the same exists.
Here are a few:
1. Archies people introduced these days to boost up the sales.
2. When you feel some thing inside, you dont need to express it. After all, actions speak!
3. I love every one around so much that i dont need a dedicated day to show my love and affection.
4. [Best one] It is just another day. If it is so special, why dont we have a national holiday for that?

Well, whatever be the case, this Sunday i am not going to miss out this oppurtunity. Infact i feel this day has come at such a perfect time when atleast i needed it the most! Recently i got to know that my mom is actually fed up of my selective food habits. I know i am skinny, i actually love to play with my protruding blue-green veins which are so very through my skin, but trust me, i love variety and almost everything to anything when it comes to food and drinks.

I mean any mom would get a little annoyed if her son wants 6 meals a day! For toddlers, its fine, but consider a 21 year old lad whose gonna join a company out of delhi. Its not a pain in the neck, but the concern that makes my mom upset. Who would cater me after i go out in the "REAL WORLD" till i get married. Oh, how can i forget to mention! According to my mom, "teri biwi teri itni sewa nahi karne wali"!

I dont know about my long-term future, but in short term, its the best time to get her chilled out a bit. I'll think of my "BIWI" from this monday, till then its time i think a bit of appreciation wont hurt. Hey Archies people, beware! Here i come! Uh, i dont bite, but if you dont have the right stuff in stock, i do have strong potential of doing so! Pepsodent power!

This is for all final year students, my fellow companions, "Bada ULTIMATE mauka hai, maska maarlo!". Lets forget that orthodox side of ours and lets just be appreciative this once!

This is for my Frenz's moms-> "Happy Mother's Day Aunty, Gr8 job!"
This is for my not-Frenz's moms-> "Happy Mother's day Aunty, its not your fault. Zamana hi kharaab hai! Ghor Kalyug!"
Ok that was a bad joke!

For all the guys, ciya at Archies this saturday. As for girls, you can cook fantastic meals and give your mom a nice holiday!

Well, maybe a frank n from the heart wish may also work!

MY-CROW-SOFT

Congratulations Ms. Neha Jini for getting through Microsoft!
You have done us proud! Is this all for publicity purpose? If yes, dont you think they have gone too far?

Well, i think its not just publicising their own product, it is also about popularising e-shopping trends. Although e-shopping is available for long time now, but still it is not that rocking as it should be. Reason is simple, e-shopping sites do not follow WYSWYG (What you see is what you get!). This is my personal experience, though it is not that things turn out bad, sometimes actually you get things worth a lot more.

But you need to think all that if you are talking of YOUR money! When its upto GIFTMATE, its free! Who cares what you get! I got tempted and bought a vaccuum cleaner for 175 that turned out a total rip-off! But it gave me fair bit of attention from freinds!

As of the question, WHY?
Its all publicity! If they gave advertisment with SRK dancing, probably people would never log on to their website. Now if they give same 10 crore to audience instead of SRK, now people are atleast getting a demo! If they sponsored a Cricke series, after shelling out 100 crores, what is the gaurantee that anyone would ever type in giftmate.co.in in their browsers!

What is the future of giftmate?
My personal opinion! Its a total flop show! Consider this, if i buy a giftmate voucher of 250 from my credit card, why should i not purchase directly the product from my credit card in first place? Why is this medium in between?

Point is:
Vaccuum cleaner: Rs. 175
2 Movie CDs: 75
.
.
.
.
.
.
2GB Pendrive: Rs. 349
e-Shopping: Priceless!

We guys dont use the vouchers till last date, coz we just love to do shopping! It is so much fun! Simply awsum!

Offers:
Kisko milega cash?--Star 1--Rs.250 voucher--Weekdays 10PM---First 50000
Chhote Ustaad---Star Plus---Rs.250 voucher--Till 5April---3000 daily
India-Safrica---Neo Sports---Rs. 100+ 10*10--During matches---No idea!
MTV Roadies---MTV---Rs. 200--- No idea if it is still on!

Cry Baby (CB) series is over!

Cry Baby Australia series is now over! And best part is, australia has been fucked by India in Australia! Both, in cricket & in image as well!Australia has been exposed and they are running naked with their crushed pride! Finally!
Anyways, world has another legend now, Adam Gilchrist! CAPTCHAs are used for various purposes such as preventing automated account creation on websites, prevention of traffic flooding on websites and spam-protection etc., but CAPTCHAs deny access to visually impaired humans as well. Most visually impaired people use narration softwares, so visual CAPTCHAs deny access to those considering them as bots. Audio CAPTCHAs help the visually impaired people pass the test, though they possess major challenge as bots may pass such a CAPTCHA by voice to text translation. Hence, some trivial or lingual techniques need to be employed in order to make them effective against bots but easy to crack for humans.

Me along with my team-mates approached National Student Symposium, part of IEEE tech-fest Fervour'08 at Bhartiya VidyaPeeth College of Engineering(BVCOE) with this topic of ours. The event was Technical Poster Presentation. We were ale to score 2nd rank out of 31. You can have a look at my poster in my orkut profile.
http://www.orkut.com/AlbumZoom.aspx?uid=3164082510346742246&pid=1202236926539&aid=1202211527

The basic plus points of this topic are:
1. Almost every user of internet has been through a CAPTCHA, but very few know about it. So this is something people have passed but do not know why they even had to encounter the same.
2. So, lets come up with a perfect and fool proof plan to make that percentile level go a little higher by efforts of the final days. Everyone follows his/her own plan, some people do not really follow a plan, instead, just go on. To such people, i have a question:

If you do not believe in planning and managing your work and time, then why do you think people will come up to you for management tasks? After all, thats what you are out to do!

So, here is one last week plan i feel will give you a self assessment on how you can attempt your CAT examination! So here it goes:

Step 1
Break up your last seven 24 hours.
Lets suppose you would like to sleep 8 hours a day and take 4hours of daily activities. So, you have 12 hours of study a day!

Step 2
Attempt 2 FLTs ( Full Length Tests) a day. Attempt the first one early in the morning after a brisk walk (so you stay active and full in concentration). Do not use a rough sheet, so you'll know which questions will let you save time. Ofcourse questions do not repeat, but the type does! Do not attempt questions you are not sure of. After having a bath and breakfast, analyse and solve the rest of the paper using solution key (if you have one) or through your study material.

Step 3
Attempt the next one with rough work. Again do not attempt any question you are not sure of. You'll be tempted to make lucky guesses, but try not to cheat yourself! Give yourself a break after this attempt and again analyse and solve the FLT. Note the timing and marks difference between first FLT and second FLT. You'll know your capabilities and strengths better. Also your sectional or question based timing will become clear.

Step 4
If there's more time, its upto you to decide. You may listen to motivating english or Chak De songs, or maybe have a look at your study material. Choice is yours.

Go for this process for 3 days, i.e., you have to attempt 6 FLTs during this period. Now, for the next 2 days, allow yourself to attempt questions you are not sure of. Try only smart guesses! Follow the same pattern of 1 FLT with rough work and 2nd without. On the sixth day, attempt these two FLTs with all kinds of guesses, lucky ones and smart ones. Dont just attempt it all.

Now the final day before CAT, just take a look at your 12 FLTs. Mark your best attempts, note which sections take up most of your time and thought process. Analyse which way you can give yourself most time in your actual CAT paper. Strategise your D-Day!

Your strategy for exam can be devised in two ways:
1. Attempt all the paper, section wise. Attempt the sections in your preferential order.
2. Attempt the paper to make sure you clear sectional cut-offs. This strategy involves quick attempt of all sections for obtaining the quick and confident score, and then attempting your best sections to make your result all better.

All the best. You can modify or chose your own plan as per your conveneince. But, if you do not structure your approach, you may lose out some important percentile levels you could have gained at the last moment.

If you stop to grow, you actually stop!
So keep going, each smartly used moment may give you an extra edge over others!

Realised And Corrected My Mistake!

The major mistake i committed was writing an amature abstract! So, i thought my main focus should be the representing my idea in most efficient and attractive way so readers should get an insight with my research through the Abstract!

So, i start to search for best way to write an abstract. Here's what i got!

How to Write an Abstract!

Abstract

Abstract is written after the report is completed, although it is intended to be read first.

Because on-line search databases typically contain only abstracts, it is vital to write a complete but concise description of your work to entice potential readers into obtaining a copy of the full paper. This article describes how to write a good computer architecture abstract for both conference and journal papers. Writers should follow a checklist consisting of: motivation, problem statement, approach, results, and conclusions. Following this checklist should increase the chance of people taking the time to obtain and read your complete paper.

Checklist: Parts of an Abstract

Despite the fact that an abstract is quite brief, it must do almost as much work as the multi-page paper that follows it. In a computer architecture paper, this means that it should in most cases include the following sections. Each section is typically a single sentence, although there is room for creativity. In particular, the parts may be merged or spread among a set of sentences. Use the following as a checklist for your next abstract:

Motivation:Why do we care about the problem and the results? If the problem isn't obviously "interesting" it might be better to put motivation first; but if your work is incremental progress on a problem that is widely recognized as important, then it is probably better to put the problem statement first to indicate which piece of the larger problem you are breaking off to work on. This section should include the importance of your work, the difficulty of the area, and the impact it might have if successful.

Problem statement:What problem are you trying to solve? What is the scope of your work (a generalized approach, or for a specific situation)? Be careful not to use too much jargon. In some cases it is appropriate to put the problem statement before the motivation, but usually this only works if most readers already understand why the problem is important.

Approach:How did you go about solving or making progress on the problem? Did you use simulation, analytic models, prototype construction, or analysis of field data for an actual product? What was the extent of your work (did you look at one application program or a hundred programs in twenty different programming languages?) What important variables did you control, ignore, or measure?

Results:What's the answer? Specifically, most good computer architecture papers conclude that something is so many percent faster, cheaper, smaller, or otherwise better than something else. Put the result there, in numbers. Avoid vague, hand-waving results such as "very", "small", or "significant." If you must be vague, you are only given license to do so when you can talk about orders-of-magnitude improvement. There is a tension here in that you should not provide numbers that can be easily misinterpreted, but on the other hand you don't have room for all the caveats.

Conclusions:What are the implications of your answer? Is it going to change the world (unlikely), be a significant "win", be a nice hack, or simply serve as a road sign indicating that this path is a waste of time (all of the previous results are useful). Are your results general, potentially generalizable, or specific to a particular case?

Other Considerations

An abstract must be a fully self-contained, capsule description of the paper. It can't assume (or attempt to provoke) the reader into flipping through looking for an explanation of what is meant by some vague statement. It must make sense all by itself. Some points to consider include:

Meet the word count limitation

Any major restrictions or limitations on the results should be stated, if only by using "weasel-words" such as "might", "could", "may", and "seem".

Some publications request "keywords". These have two purposes. They are used to facilitate keyword index searches, which are greatly reduced in importance now that on-line abstract text searching is commonly used. However, they are also used to assign papers to review committees or editors, which can be extremely important to your fate. So make sure that the keywords you pick make assigning your paper to a review category obvious (for example, if there is a list of conference topics, use your chosen topic area as one of the keyword tuples). Be sure that those exact phrases appear in your abstract, so that they will turn up at the top of a search result listing.

Do not include a statement of scope; a sentence like "this paper will look at...." is inappropriate in an informative abstract.

Revise the draft into smooth, stand-alone prose; the abstract itself should be a mini-essay.

Edit the revision. Be sure that the abstract is complete and accurate. Double check that the abstract is written in the same voice as is the paper.

Writing an efficient abstract is hard work, but will repay you with increased impact on the world by enticing people to read your publications. Make sure that all the components of a good abstract are included in the next one you write.

Aim Of The Blog!

The basic aim of this blog is to step by step highlight the progress and modification in the minor project.
You get to learn from each stage, and thats what this blog shows for me.
Though the blog is starting from the third phase of the progress, better late than never!

An Idea Rejected!

As the world moves on to next level of technology, computers and machines need to become more interactive and intelligent. The problem domains have gone so vast that explicit description for each considerable case makes it highly difficult and error prone technique for programming. Therefore, the solution may not be achieved by Case Based Reasoning (CBR). The solution is given by concepts of artificial intelligence. Though intelligence is not very clearly defined, still programs may be given a status of somewhat intelligent or highly intelligent depending upon the behavioral outputs that they give according to the problem domains.

The major objective is to conceptualize the real estate cost estimations using the artificial intelligence concepts. Major concepts to be used fall under the category of Neural Networks, Fuzzy Logic and Genetic Programming. The real estate cost estimation possesses a challenge that there are various parameters that drive the markets which do not have specified metric for evaluation. But still the human agents are able to quote the prices by examining those parameters. They may not even know how they are able to give variable weightage to different parameters, it may be concluded that they do so by their experience. Thus the program needs certain level of intelligence to make accurate or nearly accurate estimations.

Such a system would essentially need Fuzzy Logic implementation since the parameters defining the domain are otherwise not determinable. Only relative relations may be determined using membership values.

Though for estimation to be automatically or intelligently determined, either or both neural networks and genetic algorithms can be used. Neural networks provide computing and learning capability through the proposed model of Multi-Layered Perceptron with Backpropogation whereas genetic algorithms provide the concept of Fitness Function to improvise upon the results. More techniques from one or both concepts may be used for implementation.

The scope of this paper is limited to conceptualization and development of algorithms for providing solution to the problem domain by means of supervised learning in neural network model and improvisation of result by fitness function concept of genetic algorithms which may be extended to complete implementation further.
